PM to open Sports Dome

For those involved in the building of the Tamworth Sports Dome today's official opening marks the beginning of a new era in what the region has to offer.

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will officially open the $10.4 million facility this afternoon.

The Commonwealth contributed almost half of the funding needed for the project.

The new building boasts state of the art indoor and outdoor Netball and Basketball Courts, as well as conference rooms able to cater for more than 200 people.

Sports Dome Manager, Kathy Barber, says its the most multi-functional sports facility in Regional New South Wales.

She says its already says the sports dome is already attracting large events they were unable to host in the past.

"Next week we're hosting a dinner for Essential Energy for a couple of hundred people, last week we held a training course for 75, this week we kick off the NSW Primary School Girls Basketball State Championships, with 14 teams from across NSW travelling to Tamworth, looking to compete to be the champions for 2011.

"There's a considerable number of sporting opportunities for the sports of basketball, netball, hockey, and those type of sports.

"But we also offer training facilities, we have meeting rooms where people can hold functions, so we have all those additional opportunities for the community to utilise the facility and we also offer little things like birthday parties for kids," she said.

Ms. Barber says it's both exciting and appropriate to have the Prime Minister officially open the facility.

"To be having a senior federal politician, committing money to the building and the council project in the first place is a great honour for Tamworth Council and certainly it's been really well done for the community.

"It will be very special to have the place officially opened by the federal government and acknowledging their support for the Tamworth community.

Tinkler Sports Group working towards Newcastle basketball side

The Tinkler Sports Group is working to get Newcastle Basketball on-side in a bid to strengthen its proposal for a Hunter team in next season's national competition.

T-S-G will today meet with representatives from the local association, as it works on its submission to Basketball Australia.

Newcastle hasn't been represented in the National Basketball League since 2006, when the Hunter Pirates folded.

Group C-E-O, Troy Palmer says a decision on the new side is expected to be made by the end of November.

"Similar to what we've done with the Jets and the Knights, is that we want to make sure that we've got a strong junior association and local association so that's an important part of our business plan and our strategy for our NBL team," he said.

"So it's important that we have the local basketball association on side when we go to the NBL."

Mr Palmer says if it's successful in its bid for a Hunter team in next season's National Basketball League, the side will be closely linked with local junior associations.

"That's our strategy for all our teams, is to have a solid, solid relationship with the local competition and also for us to build pathways from the local competition into the national competition," he said.

"We'll start putting the business plan together that incorporates some of the initiatives that the local competitions are doing now, and for us to build on."
