Dorsey delays Breakers' title charge
Ron Dorsey hit two clutch three-pointers to keep Cairns' hopes of a maiden NBL championship alive with an 85-81 win in double-overtime in game two against New Zealand at the Snakepit on Sunday.
The series now returns to Auckland on Friday night for the decider with the Breakers looking to become the first ever Kiwi team to win a title in a major Australian competition.
New Zealand guard Kirk Penney sunk what were to be the go-ahead free throws that gave the visitors a two-point buffer with seven seconds to go in overtime.
But Dorsey, who finished with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks, sent the game to a second extra period for the first time in the league's grand final history with an on-the-move shot from well beyond the arc.
He knocked Breakers veteran and three-time title winner CJ Bruton to the floor in the process, levelling things at 73-73.
Bruton himself had forced the first extra period with a three-pointer that tied the game at 61-61.
It became a three-point shoot-out as both sides searched for an unreachable lead despite neither team having much success from downtown in regulation time.
Kevin Braswell had the hot hand for the visitors, hitting two of his four buckets from long range in the first overtime period on his way to 18 points.
He hit back-to-back field goals - a lay-up and a long two from the wing - to pull the Breakers back to parity at 81-81, but Ian Crosswhite's bucket and two free throws to Ayinde Ubaka iced it for Cairns with 10 seconds in double-OT.
Crosswhite finished with 15 points and six boards, Ubaka had 15 and seven while Daniel Dillon (10 and eight) and Alex Loughton (10 and five) displayed the Taipans' depth on the bench.
New Zealand dominated game one, an 85-67 result in Auckland that saw Penney finish with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds, but he was restricted to 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting (0-of-5 from three-point range) on Sunday.
Thomas Abercrombie (17) and Mika Vukona (10 points, 21 rebounds) were again solid contributors for the minor premier Breakers.

We'll beat 'em again: Dorsey
Ron Dorsey says the Cairns Taipans will beat the New Zealand Breakers again this Friday to take out the NBL Championship. After the Taipans' 85-81 game two double overtime victory, it's hard to argue with him.
Taipans star import, Ron Dorsey walked out of the home team's change rooms at the Cairns Convention Centre with a satisfied look on his face.Dressed neatly in his team polo, slacks and dress shoes he was quickly greeted by local media clamouring for his attention.
Dorsey calmly dropped his gym bag, smirked and walked over as though he half-expected it while girlfriend, Carmen Papillon waited a few moments longer, beaming with pride.
The Cairns Taipans had just held off the New Zealand Breakers in game two of the best of three NBL Finals series with an 85-81 double overtime win.
Dorsey's 22-points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists performance clearly made him a standout but his game was better than the stats suggest.
Dorsey hit several clutch shots, including a 30-foot three point basket he described as the 'biggest of my career' at the buzzer to send the game into double overtime. Two plays earlier, he'd drilled a three from an inbounds pass in the front court to make it 70-71. Kirk Penney was then fouled and sank two free throws to set up the late game heroics.
Even though it only sent the game into another overtime, the second three effectively snatched the Doctor John Raschke trophy away from the Breakers.
Instead of sweeping the Taipans, they'll be back in Auckland this Friday night after the Snakes took control in the second overtime.
Half an hour after the game, Dorsey hadn't finished tormenting his Kiwi foes though. Asked if the Taipans could take out game three in New Zealand, Dorsey was succinct.
"We'll beat 'em again. Take my word. We gon' to get it," he said.
Dorsey's swagger also came with a dose of humility. Taipans forward, Alex Loughton was quick to point out that Dorsey thanked his teammates in the locker room after the game.
"That's the kind of players we have in our locker room," Loughton said. "We don't have guys that say, 'Look what I did'. They say, 'Look at what my teammates got for me' and that's a big thing we've got going this year and we've got the right players to take it one step further."
Similarly, Dorsey preached the importance of team camaraderie as well.
"It's 100 percent authentic man," he said. "Everybody just comes together as one. It's one of the best teams I've been on in my career and we just enjoyin' the whole ride with y'all."
"We can beat 'em in New Zealand man. They didn't want to go to a game three with us. We just going to play our hearts out over there.
"It's not going to be the same as game one [an 85-67 loss]. We're going to go over there and play our hearts out."
With that Dorsey politely thanked the reporters and walked over to his partner Carmen, still patiently waiting.
"Baby," she grinned searching for an adjective as they hugged. "That was unbelievable!"
Ron Dorsey and the Taipans hope it wasn't unbelievable. They have to do it again this Friday night in Auckland no less.
Then again, Ron Dorsey did give his word.

Breakers prepare for torrid Taipans attack
New Zealand Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis is bracing his team for an "absolute war," as it stands on the verge of making trans-Tasman sporting history by becoming the first Kiwi side to win a major Australian competition.
Leading the best-of-three finals series 1-0 after an 85-67 home victory last Wednesday, the Breakers can deliver an expectant nation the NBL title by winning game two at the Snakepit on Sunday.
The Breakers have won all four of their games against Cairns this season, but Lemanis expects a torrid clash in front of a passionate sell-out crowd.
He echoed the sentiments of his Cairns counterpart Aaron Fearne, who on Friday said he expected Sunday's game to be a war.
"This thing will be an absolute war in game two," Lemanis said before flying to Australia.
"All the finals series have gone to three games because in game two the teams with their back up against the wall have been desperate.
"We've just got to make sure we match the desperation of Cairns, that they will bring."
The Breakers' exploits have inevitably elevated expectations back home, but Lemanis believes his team has done a good job of handling those external pressures.
"I think that's a really good strength of ours, all season we haven't got distracted by the external influences, we've focused on the day to day," he said.
The Breakers boast a league best 11-4 road record this season and are one of only two teams to have won in Cairns.
While Cairns has not beaten the Breakers this season, Fearne did not feel his side would start Sunday's game at a psychological disadvantage.
"The worst was that they beat us, they kicked our butts pretty much in that first finals game," Fearne said.
"The three games during the regular season were great games and were pretty close contests.
"If we'd been had four times in a row then it might be a bit different, but we definitely don't think that. We've played some excellent ball against them."
He was expecting a bigger contribution from forward Alex Loughton, who averages 13 points a game through his NBL career but was held scoreless on Wednesday.
"He's got to come out and play well for us," Fearne said.
"I'm sure he just can't wait to get back on the court after Wednesday's game."
Fearne reiterated rebounding would be a key area for Cairns after it got beaten 38-29 on the boards in game one.
"If we can get the advantage on the glass, that puts us in a good position to win the game," he said.
"If we don't it's going to be a struggle, so that would be the big key for me."

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker

Breakers run riot in game one
Proud Australian sports fans have to digest the very real possibility of a Kiwi club winning an Australian-run competition for the first time after the New Zealand Breakers claimed game one of the NBL grand final series against Cairns.
Bledisloe Cup rugby losses are always tough to swallow, while New Zealanders enjoy dishing out underarm cricket barbs, but they could soon have cause for fresh celebration after the Breakers' 85-67 victory in Auckland.
The minor-premier Breakers thrashed the rank-outsider Taipans on Wednesday night and can create history by claiming the best-of-three series with victory in Cairns on Sunday.
The closest a previous Kiwi team had come to claiming trans-Tasman bragging rights in Australia was the New Zealand Warriors, who lost the 2002 NRL grand final to Sydney Roosters.
Kirk Penney, one of only two New Zealanders to ever play in the NBA, led the way for the Breakers with 25 points and eight rebounds while team-mate and American forward Gary Wilkinson had 15 points.
For Cairns, centre Ian Crosswhite had 15 points and six boards while Kiwi guard Phill Jones had 14 points, including 4-of-6 outside the arc.
The Taipans are the NBL's Cinderella story after they were placed into voluntary administration during the 2008-09 season, only for a community-based ownership scheme to bring them back to life.
But there was no fairytale in Auckland.
Cairns began with promise, going on a 9-0 run in the opening quarter to lead 11-5.
Then it went pear-shaped. The Taipans ended up shooting a disturbing 13 per cent from the field to trail 17-14 at the first break - but worse was to come.
On the back of a 17-0 run, the Breakers blew their second quarter advantage out to 19 points before easing into half-time up 41-27.
The Breakers - who at one stage led by 30 points - had a 70-52 buffer by the final break before sealing the win.
The Breakers had the luxury of a week's break since qualifying for their first grand final series with a come-from-behind 2-1 series defeat of Perth.
In contrast, the Taipans - who finished third in the regular season - ended Townsville's 12-game unbeaten home streak to book their grand final berth just 72 hours earlier.
The Breakers will arrive in Cairns this weekend full of confidence thanks to a 4-0 season record against the Taipans and 9-1 overall.
Cairns import guard Ayinde Ubaka feared for the Taipans if they repeated their "soft" effort on Sunday.
"We played soft. If we play like that again they will kill us - we will be destroyed," he said.
"And it would be worse (on Sunday) because it would be on our own court.
"They beat us down. We really didn't have an answer for anything."
Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis was happy with how his side responded after Jones' three-point shooting threatened a mini-third quarter revival.
"We came out with good intensity. In that Perth (semi-final) series we let ourselves down in game one and tonight we weren't going to make that same mistake," he said.
"We took our foot off the accelerator (in the third) and you can't do that in finals basketball."

Fines for Wildcats and three players
The National Basketball League tribunal has fined three players for their part in an on-court incident during Game Three of the recent semi-final series between Perth and New Zealand.
Gary Wilkinson of the New Zealand Breakers was most relieved, his $500 fine for unduly rough play means he can take part in the grand final series against Townsville beginning Wednesday night.
Perth Wildcat Andre Brown was fined $1,000 for striking and team-mate Kevin Lisch $750 for unduly rough play.
The Wildcats were fined $1,000 for failing to attend the post-match media conference following their semi-final defeat in Auckland last Wednesday.

Breakers confident of NBL title win
The New Zealand Breakers are confident of becoming the first Kiwi team to win an Australian league title when the NBL grand final series begins against Cairns on Wednesday.
The minor premiers enter the three-game series against the Taipans as warm favourites having beaten them in each of their three contests so far this year.
The Auckland-based side has the luxury of a week's break since qualifying for their first grand final series with a 2-1 series defeat of Perth last Wednesday.
The Taipans qualified for their first grand final series on Sunday, winning the decider of their semi-final series 83-73 in Townsville.
Ever since the Warriors joined the NRL in 1995, New Zealand sides are still chasing a title in Australian competitions.
Coach Andrej Lemanis says the Breakers are hoping to be the first.
"We've had good contests with them (Cairns) in our three games in the regular season," he said.
"They are a team that gets after you defensively like Perth and I'm sure it will be a fiercely contested battle, one we look forward to.
"Both clubs have given themselves the opportunity to win their first title so both are in the same position in that regard and will be excited about that prospect.
"But as we have seen in the two semi-final series already, results before this don't mean too much, it is about playing in the here and now."
Their rise to grand finalists has capped a remarkable few seasons for the Cairns franchise which was placed into voluntary administration during the 2008/09 season, until a community based ownership scheme dragged them back into the black.
Taipans coach Aaron Fearne said community support had inspired their grand final charge.
"The support got us through," he said after their dominant victory.
"This is for the community of Cairns, that's why we are here. We would not be here if not for them. They have put in a lot of hard work and this is the pay off."
The Crocodiles led at quarter-time in the final of the three-game series but the Taipans dominated the contest thereafter on the back of a sublime performance from Daniel Dillon who scored 21 points and collected 7 rebounds.
Peter Crawford was Townsville's leading scorer with a game-high 29 points.
In a passionate post-match interview Crocodiles captain Russell Hinder illustrated his side's disappointment at missing out on their tilt at a premiership.
"Basically we have been told we suck," he said.
"Right now we are nothing. I'm nothing. That was crap. We worked our arses off to get second place. Cairns came into our house and we didn't deliver."
The best-of-three between the Taipans and the Breakers begins at a sold out North Shore Events Centre in Auckland on Wednesday.

Taipans drop Crocs from Finals race
Cairns locked up the second NBL grand final berth and ended North Queensland rival Townsville's postseason with a commanding 93-83 victory at The Swamp on Sunday afternoon.
The Crocodiles had lost just once in 14 home games this season but the Taipans were just too much after storming back from a quarter-time deficit.
The visitors, whose best season in club history will culminate in a grand final series against the minor premier New Zealand Breakers, extended the Crocs' dismal form in playoff series in front of a solid contingent of orange-clad fans that travelled down the highway in support.
Townsville has now lost six of the seven semi-finals series it has been involved in, including the last three seasons in a row.
Peter Crawford had a game-high 29 for the hosts as well as seven rebounds, making six of 10 attempts from long range. Michael Cedar chipped in with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
But it was not enough to overcome cold shooting afternoons from stars Luke Schenscher (13 points on 5-of-13 shooting), Russell Hinder (six, 2-of-6) and Will Blalock (four, 2-of-5).
Cairns spread the scoring load around with Daniel Dillon (21), Dusty Rychart (16), Ayinde Ubaka and Ian Crosswhite (12, nine rebounds) all taking advantage of their opportunities.
Accuracy was a key factor for the Taipans, who shot 52 per cent from the field and 42 per cent from downtown while forcing Townsville into 15 turnovers.
It capped a dramatic rise for the Cairns franchise which was placed into voluntary administration during the 2008/09 season, until a community-based ownership scheme dragged the Taipans back into the black.
The Breakers, who are also playing in their first grand final series, will host the first of three games at a sold out North Shore Events Centre in Auckland on Wednesday.

NBA Playoffs Preview: Eastern Conference
Posted April 17, 2011 01:16:00
Updated April 17, 2011 01:26:00
The 2010/11 NBA season proved to be one of the most headline-heavy in memory. Superstars teamed up in Miami and New York, elder statesmen San Antonio and Boston proved they still have the fire to compete for another championship while the defending champion Lakers went up and down in their quest for another hat-trick of titles.
With the postseason kicking off on Sunday morning (AEST) the Larry O'Brien Trophy is still anyone's for the taking. Denver came home with a wet sail but does it have what it takes to win a title without Carmelo Anthony? Can the Heat's three stars carry them to all the glory for the first time since 2006? Will Los Angeles deliver Phil Jackson his 12th ring and fourth three-peat? Only time will tell, but for now let's take a look at how the first round shapes up in the East.
Chicago (1) v Indiana (8)
There is no hotter team going into the playoffs than the Bulls. Owning the league's best record at 62-20 and clinching the first seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time since Michael Jordan led the team to its last title in 1997-98, Chicago is in devastating touch indeed. Former first overall draft pick Derrick Rose is at the helm this time around and is the hottest candidate in MVP discussions after having a career-best season in almost every statistical category.
Rose has matured into the franchise leader Chicago had hoped he would be, leading the Bulls through difficult stretches when marquee power forward signing Carlos Boozer and energetic centre Joakim Noah spent time on the sidelines injured. He thrived under pressure and was the player his team-mates constantly looked to late in close games. That said, Chicago certainly runs deep in every position. Boozer and Noah's understudies - Taj Gibson and Kurt Thomas - have been useful in limited minutes and backup guards Kyle Korver and Keith Bogans give the Bulls' second unit an outside shooting threat. While starting small forward Luol Deng has plenty of minutes on the clock this season he's also having a productive year feeding off Rose.
The Bulls forced an entertaining seven games out of eventual champion Boston in 2008 but were rolled in five by Cleveland last season, so Rose's and indeed his team's playoff mettle will certainly be tested against Indiana. The Pacers, on the other hand, haven't played in the postseason since 2006 when they were beaten in six games by New Jersey in the first round. That year was a nightmare for Indiana, which suffered through the infamous "Malice at the Palace" brawl against Detroit, and the franchise has not been the same since.
No player from that season remains on the Pacers' roster, which could be why they've returned to the Eastern Conference's top eight. Led by franchise player Danny Granger and young sidekicks Darren Collison and Roy Hibbert, Indiana edged Milwaukee by two games to sneak into the playoffs with a 37-45 record, making the Pacers the only losing team to reach the postseason this year. Former coach Jim O'Brien was sacked midseason and assistant Frank Vogel took the reins, somewhat reenergising the club to wins over fellow playoff teams Portland, Chicago, New York, Boston and Atlanta.
The Pacers' inexperience in the postseason is going to be a key factor in the first round against the red-hot Bulls. Their go-to man Granger can be a streaky shooter and there are few options besides Collison and Hibbert. Expect Chicago to run Vogel's charges ragged, although they can probably steal one in front of a basketball-mad Indiana crowd at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Prediction: Chicago 4-1
Miami (2) v Philadelphia (7)
All eyes have been on South Beach, Florida since the summer of 2010 when LeBron James and Chris Bosh teamed up with Dwyane Wade in Miami chasing the titles that eluded the latter pair in Cleveland and Toronto respectively. The move was divisive but love or hate the new-look Heat, they shook off a shaky start to the season, questions of chemistry and some sub-par performances against the Association's toughest teams to clinch the number two seed and book a meeting with Philadelphia in the first round with a 58-24 record. They finished in the top eight in the league in points scored (eighth, 102.1ppg) and conceded (sixth, 94.6) so there's no denying they're a threat.
The biggest question to loom over the Heat this season is their depth. Miami has three of the biggest offensive stars in the league in James (26.7ppg, 7.5rpg, 7.0apg), Wade (25.5ppg, 6.4rpg, 4.6apg) and Bosh (18.7ppg, 8.3rpg) but there's very little else backing them up. No other player on the team averages more than 8ppg, and the top honour goes to Udonis Haslem who missed 69 games due to a foot injury and is only just returning to the practise court. Centres Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Erick Dampier aren't getting any younger and have all played limited minutes this season, which could expose the Heat against strong defensive frontcourts like those in Los Angeles, Oklahoma City or a healthy Boston.
With that said, Philadelphia should not pose many problems for Erik Spoelstra's crew of stars. The 76ers enjoyed a resurgent season despite starting in a 4-13 hole that was reminiscent of last season. But with 12th-year power forward Elton Brand enjoying his best scoring year in three seasons and a better-than-average defensive output (12th in the league, 97.5 points conceded per game) as well as a shared offensive load between young guards Jrue Holiday, Lou Williams and franchise star Andre Iguodala, the Sixers returned to the postseason after missing out in 2009.
Miami swept the season series between the two teams 3-0, with Wade averaging 30.7 points on 52 per cent shooting against Philly. Expect much of the same as the Sixers come to Florida having lost five of their last six games. Even with more depth on the bench, Philadelphia will struggle to contain the firepower that is the Heat's Big Three.
Prediction: Miami 4-1
Boston (3) v New York (6)
What a difference a trade can make. While raw statistics painted one picture, the Celtics seemed to be in disarray after dealing title-winning defensive centre Kendrick Perkins and energy bench guy Nate Robinson to Oklahoma City for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic at the deadline. Boston strung together 14 wins before Christmas, including impressive victories over postseason players Chicago, Portland, Denver, Philly and Atlanta. But inconsistency and injury played niggling roles in the second half of the Celtics' season as Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal remained sidelined and unable to properly shore up the void that Perkins vacated.
Appearances can be deceiving though. In the 2010 playoffs, Boston limped into the first round looking nothing like a team that won the title less than two years earlier. But the Cs blasted through the Eastern Conference, losing only five games on their way to the finals against Los Angeles where they stretched the defending champions to a gruelling seventh game. Like their old rival Lakers, the Celtics have the innate ability to kick the energy up several notches on the big stage and with the defensive intensity of Kevin Garnett, the leadership of veteran small forward Paul Pierce, the outside shooting of an evergreen Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo's brilliant court vision, Boston should not be counted out by any means.
New York reloaded this season with the offseason acquisition of Amar'e Stoudemire and a mid-year trade that brought Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Big Apple. The Knicks certainly have their scoring sorted for their first playoffs campaign since 2004, with Anthony (26.3ppg) and Stoudemire (25.3ppg) ensuring New York was ranked the second-highest in the league in points scored with 106.5 a night - a fairly common statistic for Mike D'Antoni teams. Where the Knickerbockers will fall to Boston though is at the other end of the court - they don't play a great deal of defence. New York finished with a 42-40 record, and it's easy to see why - they had the third-worst defence in the NBA allowing 105.7ppg for the season.
Even without Perkins, Boston finished the regular season with the best defence in the league, conceding a stingy 91.1 points per game. If Shaq and Jermaine O'Neal can both return from injury to provide solid minutes down low, consider Stoudemire's effectiveness in the paint mostly negated. Putting cagey defender Pierce on Anthony will stem the flow even more, and Rondo's quickness is an easy match for veteran point guard Billups. The New York-Boston rivalry runs fierce so the Knicks certainly won't lay down, but the Celtics are more than likely to make it out of the first round.
Prediction: Boston 4-3
Orlando (4) v Atlanta (5)
The Magic haven't enjoyed the same success as they did in 2008-09 when they made it to the Finals but lost to the Lakers. They flirted with 60-win seasons the last two years with 59-23 records, but lost seven more games this time around and settled for the fourth seed in the East. Orlando's formula has not changed - with Dwight Howard (22.9ppg, 14.1rpg, 2.4bpg) banging in the lane and a host of outside shooters forcing defenders to hedge their bets - and they have a deep roster of guys who can score on a nightly basis. Vince Carter (15.1ppg), Jason Richardson (13.9) and Jameed Nelson (13.1) can all fill it up from long range, making the Magic a constant perimeter threat.
What Orlando may lack is the killer instinct to win its way through to the Conference Finals and further. Howard and coach Stan van Gundy publicly questioned the Magic's drive this season and their desire to play night in night out, and both men have expressed dismay at times when the superstar centre was left to carry the team's hopes alone. And while Orlando boasted the fourth most miserly defence in the NBA this year, it has no true back-up big man for when Howard inevitably needs a rest. Like their Florida neighbours the Heat, the Magic could run into trouble against deep frontcourts down the track.
In the first round they drew the perennial prematurely exiting Hawks. The club has not made it past the second round of the playoffs in its history in Atlanta - 42 seasons of postseason disappointment. To add more chinks to its armour, Atlanta lost its final six games - the league's worst home stretch skid among playoff teams - and has not won more than three in a row since before Christmas. The Hawks' record on the road is an average 20-21 for the season but they won their season series against Orlando 3-1, including one on the Magic's floor. Atlanta could also boast that it had a Howard-stopper in Jason Collins, a 10-year veteran who pestered the Orlando big man in their last regular-season match-up.
The Hawks have several options on the offensive end with Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Jamal Crawford all averaging more than 14 a night. But save for a few role players in Kirk Hinrich, Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia, Atlanta's depth pales in comparison to Orlando's and they will have to capitalise on a cold shooting night for the Magic if they want to take a couple of wins out of this series.
Prediction: Orlando 4-2

Crocs at full strength for semi
Townsville will have key big men Luke Schenscher and Russell Hinder fit and ready to fire against the visiting Cairns Taipans in Sunday's NBL semi-final decider at The Swamp.
Earlier in the week, Hinder (knee) and Schenscher (elbow) had both been listed as requiring a fitness test.
But Townsville coach Trevor Gleeson said they will "be definitely right come game three".
Guard Brad Williamson (hand/thumb) has also been cleared to play, meaning Townsville will throw a full-strength roster at the Taipans.
Cairns will bring its strongest available roster, with veteran guard and sole remaining foundation player Aaron Grabau to suit up despite suffering back soreness after taking a big hit in game two.
The North Queensland rivals will be playing their fourth straight game against each other after squaring off in the final round of the regular season and, including preseason clashes, will be meeting for the eighth time in the current campaign.
The winning team will advance to a best-of-three final series against minor premier New Zealand, which defeated defending champion Perth 2-1 in the other semi-final series.
Townsville has lost five of its six semi-final series, falling at that stage for each of the last two seasons.
"We've been in this situation a number of times, especially the last two years we've been in game three of the semi-finals, now it's our time to make that next step," Gleeson said.
For its part, Cairns has already achieved its best ever season, regardless of Sunday's result.
The Taipans notched their highest ladder position of third and their game-two success against Townsville was their first semi-final win in franchise history.
Cairns will take an army of around 600 to 800 supporters to a venue where the Crocs have lost only once in 14 matches this season.
"It will be a sea of orange, the orange army is heading down the road to Townsville, it will be fantastic," Cairns coach Aaron Fearne said.
"I think the keys to the game ... we obviously need to do a good job defending Luke Schenscher.
"We need to make life very difficult for Peter Crawford in particular, but also Michael Cedar.
"Those three are really their main scorers."
Gleeson wanted Townsville to share the ball more after its 17- point loss in game two, where it made just four of 24 three-point attempts.
"We had a pretty intense video session early in the week and the boys have been outstanding on the court," he said.
He added the Crocs needed to improve their rebounding after losing 42-32 on the boards in game two and nominated imports Ayinde Ubaka and Ron Dorsey as key players for Cairns.

Australian basketballer Liz Cambage hits the big time
Cambage is one of the few Australian women able to make a lucrative living from sport. Many top female athletes hold down several jobs to pursue their passion.
Amy Bainbridge compiled this report.
ANNOUNCER: The Tulsa Sharks select Elizabeth Cambage from Australia.
AMY BAINBRIDGE: Things are looking up for Liz Cambage and hopefully, for Australian basketball.
After the boom time of the 1990s basketball has struggled here, while rugby league, Aussie rules and netball have flourished.
Rachael Sporn represented Australia at three Olympic Games and played for Detroit Shock in the WNBA.
RACHAEL SPORN: At the moment we're trying to really get the WNBL back to where it used to be. I'm hoping that what?s happened with Liz will help that.
AMY BAINBRIDGE: This year, some men's basketball games are back on free-to-air television, giving the sport a much-needed boost.
Larry Sengstock is the CEO of Basketball Australia.
LARRY SENGSTOCK: Oh look I think it's fantastic, it's fantastic for Liz, it's fantastic for basketball in that it's a great motivation for young girls to get in and play basketball.
AMY BAINBRIDGE: Liz Cambage is part of a small, elite group of Australian athletes able to make a full-time wage from playing basketball.
This week, the Federal Government increased funding to the nation's top athletes ahead of next year's Olympics.
The Direct Athlete Support scheme will receive an extra $3 million a year and there's extra money for athletes ranked in the top four in the world.
Rachel Sporn knows just how hard it can be trying to hold down a job and make it to the top level of sport.
RACHAEL SPORN: I guess when you're younger you're able to cope with more things, but I used to work in a sports store so I would actually work on my, you know, stand on my feet all day, and if I had a some NBL game with Lightening on a Friday night at 6:00, I'd work until 4:00 and go straight to the stadium.
AMY BAINBRIDGE: Is Liz really, I mean as you said it really is elite isn't it. She's sort of the exception isn't she, I mean there's not really that many women in Australia who can make a comfortable living out of playing the sport is there?
RACHAEL SPORN: No there's not and when you look at the percentage it's probably only 5 per cent of WNBL players who probably make a great living, and of course they are the players that are committing to the European season, or if they're lucky enough to get a gig in the WNBA .
BRENDAN TREMBATH: Rachael Sporn, the three-time Olympian and ABC sports commentator, ending that report from Amy Bainbridge.

Bryant fined $100,000 for anti-gay slur
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for comments directed at a referee during a recent game that have been strongly criticised by a leading gay rights group.
Television cameras caught the 13-times All-Star shouting an anti-gay slur at the referee shortly after he was called for a technical foul during yesterday's (AEST) game against San Antonio.
The league said the comments by Bryant, one of the NBA's biggest names, offensive and excusable.
"While I'm fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated," NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement.
"Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society."
The incident occurred during the third quarter of the game after Bryant was given a technical foul that prompted him to storm to the Lakers bench, hit his seat and throw a towel.
Prior to receiving the fine, Bryant released a statement on the incident.
"What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period," the 32-year-old five-times NBA champion said.
"The words expressed do not reflect my feelings toward the gay and lesbian communities and were not meant to offend anyone."
But Bryant's actions were strongly criticised by Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a gay civil rights group, who described the outburst as "horribly offensive" and demanded a full apology.
"For better or worse, Kobe Bryant has created a teachable moment for the millions of fans - many of them young - who saw that outburst on the floor," HRC president Joe Solmonese said.
"And the right thing to do now is to apologise and take responsibility for suggesting that the worst thing you can do to someone is to scream out a gay slur.
"This kind of homophobic outburst has dangerous consequences, even more so when it comes from a celebrity in the national spotlight."

Wildcats hopeful of Redhage return
Perth Wildcats are hopeful star forward Shawn Redhage can return to his blistering best next season as the club deals with their early exit from this year's NBL finals series.
The Wildcats' 2010-11 campaign came to a shuddering halt on Wednesday night when they were thumped 99-83 in the deciding game of their semi-final series with New Zealand Breakers in Auckland.
Redhage's season-ending hip injury in January robbed the defending champions of their most potent weapon, with his absence keenly felt as the Breakers wrapped up the semi-final series 2-1.
The 30-year-old, who is still in the US after undergoing two rounds of surgery on his hip, plans to return to Perth next month to continue his lengthy rehabilitation.
Although Redhage's playing prospects remain somewhat murky, Perth coach Rob Beveridge said the five-time club MVP remained a major part of his plans to build a successful dynasty at the Wildcats.
"If we had Redhage we would've, could've, should've been in the grand final," Beveridge said.
"So there's no doubt we want Redhage involved.
"He's been an MVP at the club and he's a massive part of the future as well.
"It's the unknown with him (as to when he can play again) but we'd love for him to be involved."
Although import Kevin Lisch is yet to decide on his future and mid-season acquisition Andre Brown is unlikely to be required for next season, Beveridge hopes the rest of the squad will stick together.
"We're about trying to build something very special," Beveridge said.
"I guess if you want to have people talk about the glory days, during those days you had stability in the club with the likes of Ricky Grace, Andrew Vlahov, James Crawford and Scott Fisher.
"They were around for a long period of time and created a lot of success.
"That's exactly what we want to do, keep the majority of the group and get better than what we were this year."
The Wildcats finished the regular season in fourth place, but Beveridge said that was an achievement in itself following the club's injury-plagued campaign.
"Everyone always forgets that we lost Matty Knight for 13 games and Jesse (Wagstaff) for 11 games," Beveridge said.
"So we had to have all the guys play out of position.
"Right now I don't know if there are too many teams in the league, if they had the extensive injuries we had, that could have made the playoffs.
"From that perspective we are really proud of the guys for the way they stuck together. This will just make them better in the future."
The Breakers, who were well led by Gary Wilkinson (20 points), Kirk Penney (18) and CJ Bruton (17) in their thumping win over Perth, will have home court advantage in the best-of-three grand final series, where they will take on the winner of Sunday's clash between Townsville and Cairns.

Breakers book first finals berth
The New Zealand Breakers won through to the franchise's first NBL finals appearance with a feisty 99-83 series-deciding victory over defending champions Perth in Auckland on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats managed to restrict Breakers danger man Kirk Penney to just 18 points, but Gary Wilkinson lifted to fill the scoring void, the US big man nailing 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting to help New Zealand clinch the series 2-1.
Although Penney could not repeat his 38-point haul from game two, his 5-of-8 shooting from long range was just as critical.
CJ Bruton (17 points) and Thomas Abercrombie (10) also chipped in with handy hauls as the Wildcats struggled from long range, hitting just 4-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.
Matthew Knight (17 points) battled manfully for Perth and Jesse Wagstaff and Stephen Weigh each chipped in with 12 points, but Kevin Lisch was kept to just nine points in what could be his final game for the club.
Tensions threatened to boil over early in the final quarter when Wildcats import Andre Brown lost his cool in a scuffle and struck Breakers big man Mika Vukona in the face with an open hand.
Vukona was only trying to calm down Brown at the time and the referees had no hesitation in ejecting the Wildcats import from the game.
The Breakers led by seven points at the time and never looked troubled from that point onwards, cruising to victory to set up a grand final showdown against the winner of Sunday's clash between Townsville and Cairns.
New Zealand will be hot favourites to take out the title given it has home court advantage for games one and three (if required) after finishing the regular season in top spot with a 22-6 record.
Perth romped to the title last season but its chances of going back-to-back nosedived in January when star forward Shawn Redhage suffered a serious hip injury.
Although the Wildcats battled on to cover the loss, their lack of firepower was clearly evident against the Breakers, who never looked troubled after surging to the lead early in the second quarter.
The Wildcats made a barnstorming start to the match, opening up a 21-13 lead early on before Wilkinson hit his stride.
Penney, under some close attention from Wildcats guard Damian Martin, hit a number of clutch threes and also dished off some handy assists as the Breakers opened up a 52-43 advantage by half-time.
But it was Wilkinson who dealt out the main damage, pumping up the crowd every time he nailed a shot as the Cats' defence struggled to control the big man.
The margin stretched to 11 points at the final change and the Breakers ensured there would be no fightback with a dominant last-term blitz in front of their adoring, sell-out home crowd.

A little tweet informs Jarry of life changing news
Ballarat Rush basketballer Rachel Jarry was Tuesday morning informed via social networking site Twitter that she had been drafted to arguably the most prestigious basketball competition in the world, the American Women's National Basketball League (WNBA).
Jarry was the second Australian to be selected in this year's draft when her name was called out by the Atlanta Dream."I'm still pinching myself, I'm seriously in shock, it's just a huge honour and I'm feeling really lucky right now," Jarry says.
Jarry was at a Bulleen Boomers draft party, where the WNBL team had gathered at 5am this morning to watch teammate Liz Cambage get drafted.
Cambage was selected at pick two and the party were ecstatic, but shortly after the first round the live stream cut out, leaving Jarry to find out she had been drafted in a very unconventional but modern way.
"We couldn't get the second and third rounds up, so I just seriously got a tweet on twitter and someone said you've just been drafted to Atlanta and I couldn't believe it.
"Some guy who I don't even know said [on twitter] you have been drafted."
Since the news Jarry says she has got almost 100 new followers on twitter, all congratulating her on becoming a WNBA player.
The 19-year-old knew there was a chance she could be selected in this year's draft but didn't expect it to happen so early.
"You only have two years of being eligible for the draft and this was my first year," she says.
"Myself and my manager had been speaking to a couple of teams who had shown a little bit of interest, so I was thinking if I was going to get drafted it would be late third round."
But Jarry's name was called out in the second round at pick 18 by Atlanta.
"I hadn't even spoken to Atlanta so that was kind of out of the blue but really, really exciting."
Jarry has spent one season with the Ballarat Rush [formally the Lady Miners] in the SEABL where she was awarded the team's most valuable player as well as winning the league MVP.
She averaged 19.6 points and nine rebounds in her 23 games for Ballarat.
"My season with Ballarat last year really helped me, I was able to introduce new skills into my game in an environment where I was the go to player and had a lot of responsibility to score.
"I really carried that form over into the WNBL season, so I'm really grateful for everything that Ballarat gave me last season," she says.
This year Jarry averaged 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds playing in the WNBL for the championship winning Bulleen Boomers.
*Ballarat Rush assistant coach Sarah Monck confirmed on ABC Ballarat breakfast on Wednesday morning that Jarry has decided to stay on with the Rush for a second season and not join the WNBA until after the 2012 Olympics. Jarry's number one priority is making the Opals team in London and she believes playing in Australia will give her a greater chance of being selected. In further news, just hours after being selected by Atlanta Jarry was traded to the Minnesota Lynx.

Aussie taken second in WNBA draft
Australian basketballer Liz Cambage will play at the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA, after being taken at pick two in the draft in Connecticut.
The 19-year-old, 204-centimetre Victorian was named the most valuable player in the WNBL while playing for Bulleen last season.
"I have been given a wonderful opportunity to play with and against the highest quality players in the world. It is a dream come true," Cambage said in a statement.
"It will be a great challenge physically and mentally that will enable me to develop as a player and learn a different style of game from what we play in Australia.
"I've already met some of the Tulsa fans, who have been very welcoming."
Cambage, who averaged more than 22 points and 8.3 rebounds for Bulleen last season, told ESPN she is a very different player to compatriot and WNBA star Lauren Jackson.
"I think the American league is a lot more physical than the Australian league and I'm a really physical player so I'm really excited to finally get out and play hard," she said.
"Lauren's very, very versatile, she's got a very big outside game knocking down those threes every time so I'm a lot more inside from higher post and low post that's really my range."
Cambage's Boomers team-mate Rachel Jarry was selected at pick 18 by Atlanta Dream.
She was then on-traded to Minnesota Lynx, who also had the number one selection in the draft - American Maya Moore.
The WNBA season begins next month.
