Opals get home against Brazil

Updated July 22, 2012 09:13:24

The Australian women's basketball team survived a scare against Brazil before running out 78-75 winners in their pre-Olympics tournament in France.

The Opals had led by nine points at half-time, however the Brazilians fought back to carry a 57-56 advantage into the final term.

But the three-time Olympic silver medallists found enough to secure the victory with Belinda Snell again impressing with a 28-point haul.

The Opals remain undefeated in their pre-Olympic fixtures in Europe, having also beaten France, Great Britain, Angola and China.

They next meet France on Monday (AEST).

Boomers sweep series against Greece

Updated June 27, 2012 22:25:13

Australia wrapped up its farewell series against Greece with a 79-58 victory in the third and final game in Geelong.

The Boomers, who won the opening two games of the series 87-60 and 91-51, looked set for a comfortable victory when they held a 17-point advantage at half-time.

But that was reduced to just five points when the Greeks fought back in the third quarter to trail 44-39.

The hosts found enough in the tank to re-focus in the final term and ice the win, which gave them a 3-0 series triumph in their last hit-out on Australian soil before the London Olympics.

Matthew Dellavedova led the scoring for the Boomers with 12 points, while Joe Ingles and Brad Newley added 11-point hauls.

Georgios Bogris and Nikolaos Pappas both posted 16 points for Greece.

Their first game at the London Olympics is against Brazil on July 29.

Lightning strike against hapless Caps

Updated December 04, 2011 17:48:39

WNBL leader Adelaide came from behind to record an 84-75 win over the struggling Capitals in the South Australian capital on Sunday.

Canberra started strong and enjoyed a seven-point advantage at half-time but that was all but erased in the third quarter.

With just a one-point buffer going into the final term the Capitals went just 4-for-14 for eight points as the Lightning blew past them to take the contest comfortably.

Veteran Adelaide centre Suzy Batkovic led all scorers with 25 points while Abby Bishop had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double and Amy Lewis added 13.

Jessica Bibby was the stand-out for Canberra with 21 points while four other Capitals registered double-figure hauls, but poor shooting in the fourth quarter was too much to overcome.

In Sunday's other clash, Bendigo walked all over AIS 71-30 in Canberra.

Deanna Smith (19), Tess Madgen (18) and Gabrielle Richards (11) led the charge for the Spirit against the perennial strugglers.

Boomers surge late against Serbia

Updated August 22, 2011 08:54:10

Australia continued its impressive basketball form with a strong 78-69 victory over European powerhouse Serbia in the London International Basketball Invitational.

The Boomers bounced back from a one-point deficit at three-quarter-time to produce a huge 29-19 final term and secure victory.

Forward Joe Ingles led the Boomers with 17 points, with Brad Newley adding 14, while AJ Ogilvy grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

"We needed to rebound, and I thought that in the second half especially we were able to get stops and we'd rebound and run out of it," head coach Brett Brown said.

"This win was done by committee - everyone that came on contributed.

"The group's really responded to the defensive challenges that we've put on each other.

"We really take a lot of pride in the defensive side of the floor and to be able to hold a very deep, talented, veteran team to 69 points was just a great team effort."

Young point guard Matthew Dellavedova emerged as a key figure, contributing 12 points and some big plays in the fourth quarter.

"I think Matty Dellavedova has emerged to be a real important part of this team," Brown said.

"I thought Matty Nielsen showed great leadership down the stretch and it was Joe Ingles' best game as a Boomer.

"I think it's a great credit to the team coming in in great shape and being able to close the game out in the end.

"Their defence has been quite special the whole tournament.

"I think tonight was a real testament to their fitness.

"They did a great job of playing through a bunch of different situations to close out a very difficult game."
